You know what it feels like to bump your nose, but this time it’s different. There’s more swelling. It’s harder to breathe, and now you’re left wondering how much worse it could get.

When it comes to nose injuries, it’s best to come in when you’re unsure. At State Urgent Care, we evaluate nasal injuries daily and can help you know what to do next.

When it might be a broken nose

Nasal fractures can vary widely. Some are just simple cracks in the bone accompanied by mild bruising. Others are strong enough to bend the nose visibly, interfering with airflow or affecting the tissue around the eyes.

According to the Mayo Clinic, the signs of a nose fracture could include:

  • Pain when touching the bridge of the nose
  • Noticeable swelling or bruising, especially under the eyes
  • Nosebleeds that started after a direct hit
  • A crooked or flattened appearance

Not all nasal fractures cause a dramatic shift in appearance. That’s why you should have even minor injuries checked, especially if the symptoms don’t start improving after a day or two. Nasal fractures also sometimes occur alongside concussions or facial trauma, which may not be obvious at first.

How urgent care providers evaluate your nose

When you come to State Urgent Care, we’ll start by asking how the injury happened. Details matter: Was it a sports impact, a fall or something else? Were there any symptoms right away, or did pain and swelling build up over time?

During the physical exam, we’ll look for bruising, open wounds or blood inside the nasal passage. If your injury is mild, we’ll typically be able to manage it right here in the clinic.

When urgent care is a good first stop for a nose injury

Seeking urgent care soon after a nose injury is crucial. The first 24 to 48 hours are especially important, according to the Mayo Clinic. An evaluation during this period allows us to see the damage before swelling fully develops.

State Urgent Care can help if:

  • Your nose is swollen or sore but not significantly misshapen
  • There is mild bleeding that has stopped
  • Your breathing is affected, but not severely
  • You’re not sure if it’s broken but want answers

We’ll clean any external wounds, offer pain control, and let you know what kind of monitoring you can do at home. If we suspect a more complex injury, we may recommend a follow-up visit with an ENT specialist.

We also treat soft tissue damage around the injury, including cuts or abrasions that may need cleaning or bandaging. Some cases benefit from a tetanus update or antibiotics, depending on the extent of your injury.

When to go to the emergency room for a nose injury

Some nose injuries do require emergency medical care. The ER can be the best option if you see:

  • Heavy, uncontrolled bleeding
  • Clear fluid leaking from the nose after trauma
  • Loss of consciousness or severe head injury
  • Vision problems or major swelling around the eyes

The presence of clear nasal fluid, in particular, could point to cerebrospinal fluid leakage, a rare but serious sign that requires immediate imaging and hospital evaluation according to Brigham and Woman’s Hospital.

If you’re ever uncertain, come see us first. We can assess your symptoms and direct you quickly to higher care if needed.

What recovery from a nose injury looks like

Most nasal fractures heal within a few weeks. You can commonly expect pain and swelling to improve within 72 hours, especially with proper rest, cold compresses and elevation, as Medline Plus suggests.

To assist your healing, we can advise on infection signs and related issues, like:

  • New nasal congestion or drainage
  • Increasing pain instead of gradual improvement
  • Fever or facial redness spreading outward

These symptoms could suggest a developing infection and deserve medical attention, even after the original injury has healed.
